Symington has declared a Classic Vintage Port only 2 to 3 times a decade over the last 144 years in the Douro, and the seven years between the 2024 and 2017 declarations is the longest gap since WWII. After a run of harvests marked by heatwaves and erratic rainfall, 2024 broke the pattern: a return to old-style Douro conditions, with Touriga Nacional and the late-ripening Touriga Franca both reaching their apex. That combination, the rarity of the gap and the reason behind it, is why Symington felt compelled to declare at all.​
